Bluffton to install retractable traffic-control posts on Calhoun Street

The Town of Bluffton will begin installing retractable traffic-control posts on Calhoun Street at the corners of Lawton and Lawrence Streets starting Aug. 17. The installation will continue through Aug. 27.

The pupose of the posts, known as bollards, is to block vehicles during Old Town events and provide for a more pedestrian-friendly, walkable environment.

The installation process involves digging three-foot holes through the asphalt and pouring cement around the bollards. As a result, the retractable posts will be housed beneath the street and extended during events to divert traffic.

Part of the Calhoun Street will be blocked off during the installation process. The town will display signs alerting the public that local businesses will be open during this process. Patrons will have to walk around the construction.
