A man was killed after his vehicle crashed and became “fully submerged” in a retention pond in the RiverPort development of Hardeeville Wednesday afternoon. The male has not yet been publicly identified as of Thursday morning, although the town’s police department advised the death was “unrelated to any missing persons cases.”

The single-vehicle crash happened around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. Employees from the nearby warehouses jumped into the water in an attempt to save the driver, said Chief of Police Sam Woodward, a spokesperson for the Hardeeville Police Department.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team helped recover the vehicle from the pond, finding a deceased adult male inside.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, police say. It was not immediately clear exactly where the incident occurred, although the main development off Riverport Pkwy has a number of retention ponds alongside the industrial park’s roads and parking lots.

Located off U.S. 17 in southern Hardeeville, the RiverPort development is a nearly 6,000-acre industrial and residential development that includes the RiverPort Commerce Park.

Spokespeople from the Hardeeville Police Department and Hardeeville Fire Department could not immediately be reached for additional questions over the phone Wednesday evening.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
