Man killed in Hardeeville crash drove into ditch due to medical issue, coroner says
A Florida man who died in a Sunday night crash on Hardeeville’s U.S. 17 lost control of his car due to a medical emergency, according to officials from the Hardeeville Police Department and Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
Modesto Del Sol Guevara, 61, of Homestead, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, said Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III.
Modesto was driving a Dodge Ram pickup northbound on U.S. 17 around 9:15 p.m. Sunday when he suffered a “medical issue,” Aiken said, causing the driver to lose control of the truck and drive into a ditch.
A female passenger was not injured in the crash, said Hardeeville Police Chief Sam Woodward. She was attempting to give medical treatment to the driver when first responders arrived.
Investigators do not know whether Modesto’s death was from his injuries sustained in the crash or the medical issue, Woodward said. An autopsy and full toxicology report will be performed.
Aiken would not say whether the driver or passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
The crash is under investigation by the Hardeeville Police Department and the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
This report was updated to correct the victim’s name.
