This is a developing story.

An SUV crashed into a church in Beaufort Tuesday afternoon, injuring the driver, according to local fire officials.

Just after noon, the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department responded to a vehicle that had crashed into the front of La Iglesia Cristiana Fe y Obras, at 1544 Ribaut Road. Firefighters on the scene provided patient care and assessed damage to the building, according to a social media post from the fire department.

Both lanes of traffic heading towards Port Royal were shut down for approximately 30 minutes.

The accident involved a single car, according to Fire Deputy Chief of Administration Ross Vezin. The elderly driver experienced a medical emergency, crossed oncoming lanes of travel on Ribaut and crashed into the church. The driver was conscious upon the department’s arrival, and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, he said.

No one inside the church was injured as a result of the accident, according to Port Royal Police Chief Jeffery Meyers.
