Sheriff’s report: Man found dead at Hilton Head Walmart after ‘overdose’
A man was pronounced dead at an area box store late Friday night after what a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report called an “overdose.”
An employee at the Hilton Head Island Walmart Supercenter on Pembroke Drive was taking out the trash, according to the report, when he found a unresponsive man on the ground and rushed inside to call for help.
A Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputy arrived at the store around 11 p.m., according to the report. Emergency medical personnel were already there and administering CPR.
The man was pronounced dead at approximately 11:13 p.m., according to the report. The report classified the incident as “EMS Overdose.”
Another Sheriff’s deputy noticed an aerosol can near the man. And a shopping cart with “multiple other cans” was nearby.
The man “appeared to have a small laceration on the left side of his forehead,” according to the report.
Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said Monday afternoon that the case is “pending.”
Allen is awaiting the results of a toxicology report — which should take about eight weeks, he said — before determining cause of death.
The Walmart employee who found the deceased “provided a brief written statement, but did not wish to cooperate further,” the report said.
