A family argument on a Sheldon porch Sunday night left one man dead of gunshot wounds and another hurt.

Joseph Brown, 35, has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of the injured man, whose identity has not been released. No charges have yet been filed in relation to the deceased man, identified by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office as Ronnie Black, 61. Brown is being held at Beaufort County Detention Center.

The incident took place about 10:40 p.m. at Brown’s home on Big Estates Circle, the release said.

Brown and “several” other witnesses were taken to Northern Investigations Section Office for interviews, Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bob Bromage said.

Investigators determined from interviews and physical evidence that an argument had broken out between Brown, Black, the man who was injured and an adult female. The release indicated “all parties involved are related by blood or marriage.”

The release said Black was armed at the time of the incident and the wounded man was unarmed.

An autopsy is pending for Black, Bromage said. The wounded man remains hospitalized at Beaufort Memorial Hospital as of Monday.
