Contract approved for Beaufort’s purchase of Sea Eagle Market property
The city of Beaufort is set to buy the Sea Eagle Market property on Boundary Street after City Council approved the contract Tuesday.
Beaufort will buy the seafood business’s property for $550,000 from restricted land-acquisition money, less $28,000 Sea Eagle’s owners have already been paid for right of way.
Councilman Phil Cromer opposed the purchase. He has said the city shouldn’t take the property off of its tax rolls.
The purchase is part of a plan, with Beaufort County and the Beaufort County Open Land Trust, to buy and demolish businesses along the stretch of Boundary Street to open views of Battery Creek as a passive park. The county has secured the nearby Huddle House and the Open Land Trust has secured the United Way property.
