HiltonHead

A mother and her infant child were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a hit-and-run collision in Burton Saturday night, according to a Burton Fire District news release.

Just before 11 p.m. Burton firefighters responded to the wreck at the intersection of Trask Parkway and Bruce K. Smalls Road, the release said.

Firefighters found the mother and child inside a heavily damaged vehicle. The other vehicle involved in the collision had fled the scene.

The mother and child were taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

The collision added to what was already a busy weekend for the fire district.

Burton firefighters responded to 23 emergency calls over the weekend, including three motor vehicle accidents on Trask Parkway, a water rescue in the Broad River, two building fires, and 12 emergency medical situations, the release said.

The fire district has responded to more than 1,066 emergencies so far in 2016.
