Update: Beaufort man killed in Jasper County shooting; suspect surrenders
A Beaufort man was shot to death Monday night in Jasper County, and the suspected gunman has turned himself in, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Savon Quincy Scales, 22, was pronounced dead when deputies and Jasper County EMS were called to 402 Bailey Road in Ridgeland about 8 p.m., according to the news release.
Scales was found on the ground in front of the residence and had been shot multiple times, the release said.
The suspected gunman, Anthony Barry Bolden Jr., of Ridgeland, turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office late Monday night.
“He actually was very cooperative and turned himself in with the influence of family members,” Jasper County Sheriff Gregory Jenkins said at a news conference Tuesday.
Jenkins said investigators believe the shooting may have followed an argument between Scales’ girlfriend and Bolden.
Jenkins said Bolden and the girlfriend are related and that Scales may have tried to intervene in the argument.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, but Jenkins could not say whether it was the murder weapon. He also could not release how many times Scales had been shot.
He said his office has dealt with Bolden previously.
The incident remains under investigation by deputies and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
This is the second homicide this year in Jasper County.
“We send a message and make it very clear that the more citizens get involved, the easier these cases are to solve,” Jenkins said.
