Would-be burglar talks with alarm company dispatcher, runs from deputy

A Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy who arrived at a Lady's Island home on Saturday for an activated alarm call found the suspected burlgar still there and talking to the alarm company dispatcher.

The deputy was sent to the Sweet Grass Drive address around 2:15 a.m. and found many lights on, the front door open and the alarm sounding, according to the Sheriff's Office report.

Inside, the deputy saw a man wearing jeans, a red plaid shirt and white shoes with a small duffle bag across his shoulders talking with the alarm company dispatcher over a loudspeaker about the home's security code, the report said.

When the deputy asked the man if he had permission to be at the home, he said "yes," and continued to speak with the dispatcher in an effort to turn the alarm off.

He would not give the deputy his name or explain why there was no car near the residence, the report said.

As the man continued to be "evasive," the deputy ordered him to get on his knees until he could figure out the situation, the report said.

The man refused, approached the deputy and acted as if he could not hear his commands because of the alarm, the report said.

The deputy pushed the man away when he was within arms reach, and once again ordered him to his knees, the report said.

The man turned and ran through the house and out the back door.

The deputy chased him, but lost sight of him near the property's main gate.

Nothing was taken or damaged in the home, the report said.
