Beaufort County Treasurer Maria Walls wins Thomson Reuters award

Beaufort County Treasurer Maria Walls was named Office Holder of the Year at the 2015 Thomson Reuters Public Sector Champion Awards.

The tax and accounting business award recognizes government jurisdictions and officials that have achieved excellence in planning, leadership and service, according to a news release.

Walls was selected among 1,000 candidates worldwide for several technology initiatives she has pushed since taking office in July, including new tax collection software and a new website at www.beaufortcountytreasurer.com.

"During her time at the treasurer's office, Ms. Walls has completely changed the culture of her office, and it has resulted in faster and more effective tax services for the citizens of Beaufort County," said Joe Jackson, managing director of the Tax and Accounting business of Thomson Reuters. "Her achievements have been outstanding."

Walls and Treasurer's Office staff accepted the award at a ceremony in Carrolton, Texas, on Wednesday.

Grateful to be recognized this evening by Thomson Reuters as Office Holder of the Year for excellence in public service.
