Update: Police believe Seabrook shooting was accidental

Police are not actively searching for suspects in a non-fatal shooting in Seabrook Saturday night because investigators believe the victim accidentally shot himself.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a man shot in a car at the intersection of Young Circle and Fred Lane around 10 p.m. Saturday.

The 38-year-old victim, whose identity has not been released by police, was found in the driver's seat of his car with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A gun was sitting on the passenger seat of the car.

"It looks like (the shooting was a result of) an accidental mishandling of a firearm. All of the evidence appears consistent with that determination," Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Bob Bromage said Sunday.

The victim was taken Saturday to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment and later transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Bromage said. The victim's current condition is unknown.

Calls to MUSC Sunday were not returned.
