Sheriff's Office: Two on St. Helena charged in death of child
Two St. Helena Island residents have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of their child.
Antonio Coaxum, 24, and Dajaa Devon Fields, 25, of Storyteller Road, St. Helena, were arrested at their home Saturday night and charged with homicide by child abuse by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Capt. Joey Woodward said.
Their daughter, D'Naja Fields, died July 10 at age 6, two days after family members brought her to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff's Office said at the time.
D'Naja Fields, a student at Riverview Charter School in Beaufort, was pronounced dead at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Woodward and Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen declined to release her cause of death Sunday. The Sheriff's Office would not release further details of D'Naja Fields' death in July.
Woodward said more information would be available Monday.
Both suspects remained at the Beaufort County Detention Center on Sunday, Coaxum without bond and Dajaa Fields with bond set at $100,000, according to court records.
