Pigeon Point dock closed for repairs; landing still open
A popular downtown boat landing will remain open while its dock is closed indefinitely for repairs.
Pigeon Point Landing and its dock were closed Thursday after a structural issue was discovered with the dock.
A fisherman told a Beaufort police officer on patrol that the dock felt like it was coming apart, public works director Lamar Taylor said Thursday.
The landing was reopened Thursday, and boaters will have to launch and board without the aid of the floating dock until repairs are made, according to a city of Beaufort news release.
"We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we also want to make sure people know the boat landing -- the ramp part -- is still available for daily use," Beaufort city manager Bill Prokop said in the release.
Taylor said he was awaiting an engineer's assessment to determine the specific issue. He said boat traffic in the area creates a significant wake and causes normal wear and tear on the floating dock.
The work will be paid for with money the city budgeted for unexpected repairs, the release said.
Other area landings include Lady's Island Boat Landing and Port Royal Landing at The Sands.
