Editor's note: This article was changed to correct the name of the charter school that was briefly under lockdown and to indicate an arrest and charges in the Detuan Jenkins case.

A 20-year-old Beaufort man was shot and killed at a city basketball court Thursday night, the second murder in three months at the Greene Street recreational area.

Matthew Horne was found dead about 9:30 p.m. by officers investigating a call for shots fired at the court across from the Charles Lind Brown Activity Center, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

Gunshot wounds appeared to be the cause of death, but an autopsy will make that final determination, a news release said.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Division is aiding the police department in the investigation. No suspect information was available Friday.

The court where Horne was shot was also the site of a shooting Feb. 16, when 19-year-old Detuan Jenkins of Lady's Island was killed by an unknown gunman.

Thomas James Caron, 18, of Lady's Island was charged with murder in Jenkins' death.

Horne had been charged in a September assault that led to brief lockdown at Bridges Charter School and at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

His family released a statement Friday that said he had started to work toward bettering himself.

"In recent weeks, Matthew had become preoccupied with the seriousness of his mistakes, what he could do to better manage his problems and turn his life around," the statement said. "His devastated family reports that he engaged in discussions with his at-risk mentors about changes he wanted to make and goals he envisioned for his life.

"He greatly missed his grandparents and spent considerable time traveling from house to house assisting elderly people with yard work. His parents, Halina and Dwayne, described Matt -- the youngest of three boys -- as 'our sunshine.'"

In addition to his parents, Horne is survived by brothers Kenny Chrome and Artrell Horne, according to Horne's aunt Sasha Horne.

He had recently sought mental health counseling.

"He attended two sessions before he was killed," the family's statement said. "A bright and energetic child, Matthew became restless and troubled in young adulthood.

"But he wanted to make better choices. Matthew had just begun the process of figuring out how and where to begin."
