St. Helena Island teen identified as victim in fatal Beaufort shooting

The Beaufort County coroner identified a St. Helena Island teen as the victim in Monday night's shooting outside a Beaufort gym.

Detuan Jenkins, 19, died after being shot outside the Charles Lind Brown Neighborhood Activity Center at the corner of Hamar and Greene streets around 8:30 p.m. Monday, coroner Ed Allen said.

Neighbors said they heard men arguing in the parking lot of the center. As the argument escalated, the neighbors said they heard a single gunshot. Jenkins was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he later died from a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Beaufort Police Department.

Beaufort County Sheriff's Office K-9 units searched for the shooting suspect Monday night after a witness reported seeing the gunman run from the area, the release said.

The suspect was described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a black hoodie and dark clothing.

Allen said an autopsy was scheduled Tuesday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, the release said. Anyone with information can contact Investigator Raley at 843-322-7914.
