Teens beaten during robbery at Hilton Head park

Two teens meeting a friend for a game of basketball Tuesday afternoon at a Hilton Head Island park instead discovered he had brought four strangers to beat and rob them, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Five Hilton Head Islanders, ages 15 to 20, were arrested shortly afterward on charges of strong-arm robbery.

An 18-year-old man and his 15-year-old friend arrived at Green Shell Park at about 4 p.m. to meet a third friend, also 15, who approached with four strangers from the woods, according to a news release.

The five suspects assaulted the 18-year-old, pushing him to the ground and taking his wallet. As the victim and his friend attempted to drive off, one of the suspects shattered the vehicle's rear window, the release said.

The 18-year-old had facial injuries but refused medical treatment. His friend was unharmed.

Deputies found the suspects nearby on Squire Pope Road.

Akeem Shamar Jenkins, 17; Teron Marcel Claye, 18; Justin Kyrell Jenkins, 19; and Austin Devron Rakes, 20, each were charged with one count of strong-arm robbery.

Akeem Jenkins also was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute; his bond was set at $30,000, according to the county jail log. Bonds for Claye, Justin Jenkins and Rakes were set at $15,000 each.

The 15-year-old suspect has been charged as a juvenile and is being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, the Sheriff's Office said.
