Two teenage girls who attended Beaufort High School were killed Saturday night and a third girl was injured in a car crash on St. Helena Island when the car they were in veered off of Seaside Road, overturned and struck a tree.
Driver Chelsie Faulk, 18, of Lady's Island and front-seat passenger Kayleeana Hudson-Banks, 15, of St. Helena died in the accident at about 7:44 p.m., said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
A 16-year-old girl riding in the car's back seat was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, according to S.C. Highway Patrol. Highway Patrol and Allen would not release girl's name nor discuss her injuries, citing medical privacy laws. Allen said she was "still living" as of Sunday afternoon.
Faulk was driving a 2009 Mitsubishi sedan when it veered off the left side of Seaside Road, overturned and struck a tree, according to Highway Patrol. The accident is under investigation and no factors have been established as to its cause, said Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly.
All three girls were wearing seat belts, Kelly said.
Faulk was a senior and Hudson-Banks was a sophomore at Beaufort High, Allen said.
Beaufort High interim principal Terry Bennett said that school psychologists and guidance counselors will be at the school this morning to help grieving students.
"Anytime anything like this happens, especially in a small community like Beaufort, the tragedy impacts a lot of people," Bennett said.
According to an obituary submitted to The Beaufort Gazette, Faulk is the daughter of Rebeca Jean and Neil Thomas Pitruzzella. Allen said Faulk was the last name listed on her driver's license.
Attempts to reach the families were unsuccessful Sunday.
