Acres of grass destroyed after multiple intentional fires in a St. Helena community
Several acres of grass have been destroyed after multiple intentionally set fires around a St. Helena Island community recently, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
Sheriff’s Office deputies and Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District came to Kiwi Lane Friday afternoon to find various portions of grass had been set on fire, according to the report. No homes or other structures were damaged by the fires and no injuries were reported.
One patch of destroyed grass, approximately 1 acre, had come within about 20 feet of a home in the area, according to the report. Another burned spot came within about 2 feet of another home and yet another spot within 1 foot of a trailer. There were signs of burned grass in other areas to the side of the roadway, as well.
The fires were determined to be third degree arson, according to the report. Portions of the report were redacted on Sunday afternoon, but no arrests for arson had been made by Sunday night, according to online Beaufort County Detention Center records.
