Looking for a great Beaufort County spot to watch the eclipse? Free glasses included at this event

If you are looking for a fun way to take in the eclipse without leaving Beaufort County, this Beaufort School just might have the answer.

Beaufort Academy will be hosting an event on Monday, Aug. 21 that will include guest speakers and displays, and a video presentation in their gym. This will be followed by a viewing opportunity from the football field as the eclipse reaches its peak, which will see the moon cover 98 percent of the sun.

Beaufort County is not in the eclipse’s path of totality, where the disc of the sun is completely covered by the moon. During totality, viewers can remove their glasses as the sky darkens and the temperature drops. The sun’s corona and even some stars become visible at this time. In Beaufort County, even with 98 percent of the sun covered, none of these things will happen. Still, it should be a memorable experience.

The Kennedy Space Center is working with the Academy on providing speakers and displays, specific details of which are currently unknown.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the peak of the eclipse will hit Beaufort at 2:45 p.m. There will be free eclipse glasses available for the first 500 attendees.

Beaufort Academy is located at 240 Sams Point Road in Beaufort.
