Residents and visitors are invited to weigh in Tuesday on possible rules prohibiting or limiting tents and canopies on Hilton Head Island's beaches.

Town Council's Finance and Administrative Committee will host a public hearing on the issue at 5 p.m. in council chambers at town hall at 1 Town Center Court.

Council members are considering new rules to govern beach tents and canopies next year, after this summer saw a slew of complaints from beachgoers and lifeguards that visitors too often ditch their battered or broken tents in the sand each evening.

The trashed canopies can become unsightly and are an unwelcome headache for Shore Beach Services staff to clean up, residents and Shore Beach leaders have said.

The town does not currently limit umbrellas, tents or other canopies on public beaches.

Last year, Horry County, Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach banned tents and limited the size of umbrellas allowed in their jurisdictions.
