Shelter Cove wins economic development project of year
Shelter Cove Towne Centre has been named the state's economic development project of the year in the S.C. Municipal Association's 2015 Achievement Awards.
The award recognizes the project for innovative partnerships among the town, developer Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial, and private businesses that helped bring the complex redevelopment plan together, town manager Steve Riley said.
On Monday, town planners presented the project to association judges in Columbia, and the awards were announced a day later, said Shawn Colin, town deputy director of community development.
The Shelter Cove project has had a few bumps, though, as some residents have spoken out about the number of trees cut and Blanchard & Calhoun's plans to build luxury apartments there.
"So what you're telling me is all that controversy paid off?" Planning Commission member Peter Kristian said, sharing a laugh with Colin on Wednesday.
Now the shopping center and new community park are nearing completion, and at least three new businesses have announced they will open shop in the center this year. Mall manager Roni Allbritton has said the center is negotiating to fill its final retail vacancies, and it should be full by the end of the year.
The association will present the award at its annual meeting in July at the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa.
