KFC closes in preparation for Boundary Street renovations
KFC in Beaufort has closed -- another sign of the changes prompted by pending renovations to Boundary Street.
The restaurant at 2417 Boundary St. has been largely cleaned out, and signs on windows and in the drive-thru state, "A new road is coming through our building soon and we have been forced to close. We thank each of you for your business and look forward to a new KFC soon in Beaufort. Thank you!"
Attempts this week to reach the restaurant's owners for comment were unsuccessful.
The KFC property is one of dozens affected by the Boundary Street plan, which includes realigning the Robert Smalls Parkway intersection, building a parallel road, narrowing lanes, widening sidewalks and installing medians.
The $26.8 million project was to have started by now, but has been delayed several times. Updated timelines from city officials call for a construction start in early 2015.
According to plans, Robert Smalls Parkway will be straightened and extended past Boundary Street, through the current site of the KFC and several homes. That will connect to the parallel road, intended to provide an alternate route to Boundary Street.
Butler Preowned Vehicles closed its 83 Robert Smalls Parkway location and moved to 2418 Boundary St. this summer for the same reason. The new intersection will go through the former car dealership.
