New SC 170 sign: 'Hardeville'

Everyone needs an editor, including the S.C. Department of Transportation.

An error on a green sign on S.C. 170, at the on-ramp to westbound U.S. 278 in Okatie, directs motorists to Hilton Head Island, Sun City, Savannah and "Hardeville."

"(An error) doesn't happen often, but when it does, people definitely let us know," said Maurice Allen, a DOT maintenance engineer in Beaufort.

A sign with Hardeeville spelled correctly should come in about two weeks. The DOT's signs are made by contractors, who pay for corrected signs, Allen said.
