  • Study: More soldiers' kids seeking mental help
    WASHINGTON -- Children of U.S. military troops sought outpatient mental health care 2 million times last year, double the number at the start of the Iraq war, and there was also an alarming spike in the number of military kids actually hospitalized for mental health reasons. (full story)

  • Rotary club names new board of directors
    The Rotary Club of Okatie announced its board of directors for the 2009-10 year: President Bill Beltz, President Elect Richard Westbrook, Secretary Barbara McFadden, Treasurer John Mosca, and Sergeant at Arms Joe Redgate. Beltz received Rotarian of the year, McFadden received the Rising Star Award and Beth Ann Julseth was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for the third time. (full story)

    Editor's note: Clemson Extension is a resource for inexpensive, easy-to-fix recipes that provide good nutrition. For the recipe, ingredients are purchased at local grocery stores. Loretta Fleming, Clemson University's Expanded Food and Nutrition Educator, prepares the recipes, keeping track of the time, cost of ingredients and number of servings.   • Help community garden grow with donations
    A committee of Beaufortonians has formed to create a Beaufort Downtown Community Garden. The owners of a block of land on Prince and Bladen streets downtown have granted temporary use of the land for the community garden. The group is seeking donations for irrigation, tools, soil improvement and lumber for raised beds. Donations also will be used to sponsor free plots for residents of the Northwest Quadrant who cannot afford them. (full story)
  • Hope Haven seeking volunteers, interns
    Hope Haven of the Lowcountry, the children's advocacy and rape crisis center, is accepting applications for volunteers and interns to attend training. Hope Haven volunteers serve as hospital advocates to children and adults who are victims of sexual assault, and are also trained to answer crisis calls from the 24-hour hot line. (full story)
  • Dance theater to hold three fundraisers
    The Hilton Head Dance Theatre has announced three fundraisers in advance of the production of this year's summer gala. "Terpsichore," a performance featuring "A Midsummer Night's Dream," pieces from Bob Fosse and other classical and jazz pieces, will take place Aug. 1-2 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island.
