Lucas: Finalists for 2016 Beaufort International Film Festival named
Filmmakers from around the world will pour into Beaufort next year for the 10th annual Beaufort International Film Festival in February.
The complete list of finalists was released Wednesday morning and include filmmakers and industry professionals as close as Beaufort and as far away as Taiwan, according to a news release.
The festival kicks off Feb. 10 and runs through Feb 14.
All screenings and awards will take place at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Center for the Arts.
Named one of the top 25 "Coolest Film Festivals in the World 2013" by MovieMaker Magazine, the festival will feature awards in a range of areas from features to documentaries to short film and screenplays.
The 2015 festival attracted 10,000 people who attended some part of the four-day festival.
Highlights for the 2016 festival include:
-- North Myrtle Beach native and Wheel of Fortune icon Vanna White will be presented the Spirit & Pride of South Carolina Award.
The award is given to a person whose career achievements have reflected positively on themselves and the state of South Carolina.
-- Former Army chaplain and filmmaker Justin D. Roberts will be presented the Santini Patriot Spirit Award for his film "No Greater Love."
The "Santini" is named after Marine Corps Colonel Donald "The Great Santini" Conroy, father of Academy-Award nominated screenwriter and best-selling author Pat Conroy.
It is given to those filmmakers whose portrayal of the American active duty military, veterans or their families in a feature film, documentary or short reflects the highest standards of service and sacrifice for the good of others.
-- Jonathan Gaynor also will be presented the "Behind the Scenes" award for his more than 20 years of work as a film sound mixer.
Gaynor's resume includes more than 50 film and television credits.
