Art Notes: December offers scores of new music -- plus book events and fiber arts
For music fans, December holds a veritable feast for the ears as area venues play host to a wide range of music.
Coming up first, Jack Williams makes an appearance in the Lowcountry on Dec. 11.
A South Carolina native, Williams is a guitarist and storyteller in the Southern tradition and is as skilled at playing folk and rock as he is at playing jazz and R&B.
Williams has nine CDs to his name; his newest titled "Four Good Days."
Williams goes on at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Lowcountry, 110 Malphrus Road, Bluffton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Also playing Dec. 11, The Bobby Ryder Quintet gives "A Rat-Pack Style Salute to the Holidays."
Led by longtime nightclub singer and saxophonist, the quintet regularly performs on Hilton Head and at clubs around the region.
The group performs at 8 p.m. Dec. 11 and Dec. 12, at The Jazz Corner, 1000 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island.
The show is $10.

Rick and the boys (as in leader singer Rick Saba) take the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, at the Rooftop Bar at Poseidon, 38 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head.
The show is $5; free with local ID.

Ringing in the Holidays
If you're looking for some holiday cheer, several concerts coming up this weekend are sure to brighten your spirit.
First, the Hilton Head Choral Society presents "A Merrie Olde Christmas" at 8 p.m. Dec. 11 at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head.
The full chorus with an accompanying orchestra will treat the audience to traditional holiday carols and selections as well as a few surprises.
Ticket prices range from $20 to $35. All seating is reserved.

Then, in Beaufort, the Fellowship Concert Choir presents its annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 11, at United Church of Jesus Christ for All People, 1801 Duke St.
The free concert will feature familiar Christmas spirituals with a new twist and a few surprises.

American Idol fans should take note. Idol season 12 winner and St. Helena Island native Candice Glover, along with special guests the Battery Creek High School Choir and MLK Community Choir, presents a benefit concert at 5 p.m. Saturday Dec. 12, in Battery Creek High School's Performing Arts Center, 1 Blue Dolphin Drive, Beaufort.
"A Christmas Gospel Concert -- Candice Glover & Friends" benefits the Thumbs Up Children's Educational Center in Beaufort.

Also this weekend, an ensemble led by First Presbyterian Church's minister of music, S. Russell Floyd, performs Handel's "Messiah" at 5 p.m. Sunday Dec. 13, at the church at 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head.
The program will feature solo performances, the church's community choir and a chamber orchestra.
The concert is free.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Brass Quintet also will be in town next week.
The quintet performs a family-friendly concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 15, at Bluffton United Methodist Church, 101 Calhoun St., Bluffton, featuring Christmas and holiday songs as well as hymn sing-a-longs.
Tickets are $10 -- $5 for children -- and will be sold in advance due to limited seating.

Finally, the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra presents its holiday season concert "Winter Wonderland" featuring a variety of popular holiday favorites.
Music director and conductor, Frederick Devyatkin, also will perform a solo of Bach's "Concerto in A for Violin and Orchestra."
The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 17 and 4 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Sea Island Presbyterian Church, 81 Ladys Island Drive, Beaufort.

Literary Events to Bookmark
Book lovers will be interested to know that Cassandra King will be at a signing for a new book about writers in their native habitats out now in bookstores.
"Carolina Writers at Home" is a unique collection of essays and photographs featuring North and South Carolina authors in their homes.
An essay King wrote about her courtship with novelist Pat Conroy and a writing room he created for her leads the book.
In addition, Lowcountry author Roger Pinckney and an interesting story on the building of his house on Daufuskie is also included in the book.
The event is from 2-3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 12, at the McIntosh Book Shoppe, 917 Bay Street, Beaufort.
Just up the road in Ridgeland, The Morris Center For Lowcountry Heritage will hold a free holiday event featuring storytelling.
"Christmas Tales & Crafts" is from 1-2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 12, at the center, 10782 S. Jacob Smart Blvd.
In addition to Christmas stories and songs, the event will include cookies and a chance to create your own ornament.

Sew Unusual
Finally, a colorful new fiber arts exhibit at the Hilton Head Island Library takes an interesting look at quilts.
"Designing from Nature" features the work of area quilters and guild members including the Georgia/South Carolina Studio Art Quilt Association and the Palmetto Quilt Guild.
More than 40 quilts are on display now at the library, at 11 Beach City Road.
The exhibit runs through Jan. 9.
