Art Notes: Rejoice! The Beaufort County fall is packed with music and exhibits
The turning of the seasons must have everyone rejoicing, because an unprecedented number of musical events are set to take place over the next few days.
First, the Historic First African Baptist Church will host "Sing Hallelujah" which promises to be a joyful, spirit-lifting occasion. The event begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the church, at 70 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island. A benefit for the Mitchelville Preservation Project, "Sing Hallelujah" will feature The Voices of El Shaddai and Time for 2. The event is free though offerings are encouraged. Then, Justin Hornsby will give a piano recital at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at First Presbyterian Church, at 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head. A recent graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, Hornsby is the church's interim organist. The recital is free and will feature classical and secular works, including selections from Mendelssohn, Debussy and Rachmaninov. For details, visit www.fpchhi.org.
Rat-pack fans may sigh with nostalgia when they hear that Deana Martin, daughter of the iconic Dean Martin, will make an appearance in "Deana Sings Dino" Saturday, Oct. 2 and Sunday, Oct. 3 at The Jazz Corner.
Doors open at 6 p.m. The Bob Alberti Duo performs at 7:45 p.m., then Martin goes on at 9 p.m. Tickets are $50. For details or reservations call 843-842-8620 or visit www.thejazzcorner.com.
Several bands are slated to play at the 2015 Burgers & Brew Festival.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Shelter Cove Community Park, on Shelter Cover Lane, Hilton Head. Eclectic duo "Unicorn Meat" plays from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by Charleston-based "Ellen Drive" at 2:15 p.m. Hilton Head's "Groove Town Assault" will close out the day.
"Burgers & Brew" also will feature children's activities and, of course, plenty of tasty sliders and a variety of beer. Admission is $6. Children 10 and younger admitted free. All concessions and activities are sold separately. For details, call 843-681-7273 or visit www.islandreccenter.org.
New art, new exhibits
Not to be outdone by all the music, several new art exhibits will open this week.
First, Beaufort's floral and home store Sweet Bay teams up with the Beaufort Art Association for a new exhibit opening Monday, Sept. 28.
"Gatherings" blends the beauty of floral design with the work of painters, photographers and jewelers for this innovative exhibit.
An opening reception with wine and light refreshments will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the association's gallery, 913 Bay St., Beaufort.
The exhibit runs through Nov. 28.
Then, The Art League of Hilton Head will present Got Art? beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Art League Gallery (inside Arts Center of Coastal Carolina), 14 Shelter Cove Lane, Hilton Head Island.
The free exhibit will feature more than 100 original pieces -- from paintings to collage, sculpture and other mediums -- that will then be given away at the league's annual fundraising benefit, 5 to 8 p.m., Oct. 3.
The benefit will include wine, hors d'oeuvres, live music, prizes and a drawing in random order for each of the pieces.
Tickets are $100 and limited to 100 tickets. (Each ticket admits two people and guarantees one piece of art.)

Also, Memory Matters, a local non-profit which strives to help those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, will host an art show and fundraiser from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 29, at Memory Matters, 117 William Hilton Parkway, on Hilton Head.
Bella Notte Memories on Canvas will include food, wine, music, and a silent auction featuring art, crafts and other items. Funds raised will benefit the organization's programs. For tickets, call 843-842-6688.
Finally, an upcoming exhibit featuring sporting fish will have you doing a double take.
The Coastal Discovery Museum will present "The Great Sporting Fish," featuring the paintings of Stanley Meltzoff (1917-2006).
Regarded as the preeminent painter of game fish in salt water, Meltzoff won national acclaim for his work which has appeared in Sports Illustrated, National Geographic and Field & Stream.
His paintings are so vivid and lucid, they can easily be mistaken for photos.
An opening reception and presentation by Mike Rivkin, the owner of the collection, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Coastal Discovery Museum, 70 Honey Horn Drive, Hilton Head. Two additional programs coming up in November and December will be offered in conjunction with the exhibit.

Sensory-Friendly Flick
Finally, parents of children with special needs may be happy to hear a sensory-friendly screening of the movie "Hotel Transylvania 2" is planned for 10 a.m. Oct. 10, at Cinemark Theater, in Berkeley Place, 106 Buckwalter Parkway, in Bluffton.
This event is ideal for children with hypersensitivity to light or sounds, or who have difficulty sitting still.
Tickets can be purchased at Lowcountry Therapy Center, at 254 Red Cedar St., in Bluffton. Tickets are $10 and include a drink and snacks. For more information, call (843) 815-6999.
