Bluffton girl cruises to title at state Junior Hardcourts
Bluffton’s Brooke Wrigley powered through her draw to capture the Girls 12s title at last weekend’s South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourts in Cayce, capping her run with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Florence’s Allie Murrell.
Wrigley, just 9, lost no more than three games in any of her matches to win in her second trip to a USTA state final this year. In February, the Van Der Meer Academy student was runner-up at the Junior State Open.
Wrigley also took home the doubles crown from Cayce Tennis Center, teaming with Simpsonville’s Kiera Stewart.
Morgan Downing of Hilton Head Island was the runner-up in the Girls 18s, upending top seed Madalina Man (Lexington) in the semifinals before falling in straight sets to Columbia’s Shelby Prince. Downing later teamed with Man to win the doubles title.
Bluffton’s Walker Mikkelson took second in the Boys 10s, finishing second in a round-robin format behind Mount Pleasant’s George Hyden. Hilton Head Island’s Savarin Seebald reached the semifinals of the Girls 14s, falling to eventual champion Shianna Guo of Mount Pleasant, and Patrick Mihai won the Boys 12s consolation draw.
