Shipyard hosts Pro League tennis openers Friday night

Hilton Head Island’s professional tennis league will begin play Friday with matches at Shipyard.

Founded in 2011, the league serves as a place for local tennis professionals and highly ranked amateurs to play competitively. Notable players such as Tom Shimada, who peaked at No. 40 in the world doubles ranking in 2001, are slated to take part once again this season.

Play will start at 6 p.m., with teams squaring off in three doubles matches per event. Admission is free, and concessions will be offered.

The schedule for the season is as follows: Friday at Shipyard, April 29 at Sea Pines Country Club, May 6 at Palmetto Dunes, May 13 at Tennis Club of the Lowcountry, May 20 at Moss Creek, May 27 at Wexford and June 3 at Long Cove Club. For more information, visit ProLeagueTennis.com.
