Hilton Head Island-based team wins USTA national title

The women’s tennis team from Hilton Head Island, representing the USTA Southern Section, captured the national title over the weekend at the USTA League Adult 18 and Over 5.0+ National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

Hilton Head Island defeated a team from Tampa, Fla., 2-1, in the championship match. 

Earlier in the day, the Hilton Head Island team defeated a team from New York, 3-0, in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team, based out of the Wexford Tennis Club, is captained by Tammy Zawacki (Hilton Head Island) and features Marissa Chapin (Myrtle Beach), co-captain Deanna Vroman (Daniel Island), Taylor Taylor (Memphis, Tenn.), Michael Ballard (Germantown, Tenn.) and Katrina Barnes (Myrtle Beach).
