Jerry Kirk tennis tournament kicks off Tuesday at Port Royal Racquet Club

Tuesday sees the start of the second Jerry Kirk Cup Memorial Tennis Tournament on Hilton Head Island.

The event runs through Thursday at the Port Royal Racquet Club and features some of the nation's best 60 and over male tennis players. The event is held in a team format, and is free to spectators.

Dave Partington and Rick Richenbach will captain a local Hilton Head Island team, which will serve as the event's host. They will be in competition with teams from Myrtle Beach, Clearwater FL and USTA Section teams from Eastern, Northern, Middle Atlantic, Southern and New England. Each team match will consist of three doubles matches.

First round play begins at 8:30 a.m. The same schedule will follow Wednesday and Thursday with finals held Wednesday afternoon.

Kirk was a nationally ranked senior who played out of Bitsy Grant Tennis Center in Atlanta. He died several years ago shortly after his senior team won the Southern Section Championship.
