Several local players still alive in USTA Southern Level 1A Championships
As the USTA Southern Level 1A Championships for Boys and Girls 12s and 14s winds down Monday, several local players are still alive.
Hilton Head Island’s Scott Sculley, the top seed, reached the semifinals in the Boys 14 bracket.
After a tough match in the round of 16 that saw Sculley down ninth-seeded Christian Picot of Davidson, N.C., 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, Sculley went on to beat fifth-seeded Joshua Rabb of Woodstock, Ga., 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the Girls 12 singles, Hilton Head Island High School standout Sayda Hernandez reached the semifinals, as well.
In the round of 16, the second-seeded Hernandez blanked Katie Lewis of Cumming, Ga., 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, she beat Kayleigh Yun-Thayer of Woodstock, Ga., 7-5, 6-3.
In Boys 14 doubles action, the second-seeded team of Sculley and Jack Wylly of Savannah beat Griffin Babineaux and Picot 8-4 to reach the final. They play the top seeded team of Keshav Chopra and Phillip Jordan on Monday.
In the Boys 12 doubles, the third-seeded team of Hilton Head Island’s Jackson Armistead and Xavier Ecarma knocked off Sidhant Hotchandani and James Rico, 8-6. They’ll face the top-seeded duo of James Delgado and Tonmye Nirundorn on Monday.
Play opened at 8 a.m. Monday. The event is free and open to the public. The singles finals should get started between 11 a.m. and noon.
