Hilton Head team 6th at USTA Junior Team Tennis Nationals
Cameron Clark, Stevie De Vincentis and Katie Rankin had a perfect weekend at the USTA Junior Team Tennis Nationals held in Columbia this weekend to lead the Hilton Head Island Landsharks to a sixth-place finish.
Clark and De Vincentis teamed up to go 5-0 in boys doubles, while Rankin went 5-0 in girls singles in the 18 and under intermediate division featuring the top 16 teams from around the United States and its territories in the Caribbean. The Landsharks were representing the Southern Section.
The Landsharks, who train at the HHIT Tennis Academy at the Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort, narrowly missed an opportunity to play for the top spot in the nation. They were edged out by Kansas City in round-robin play by three games.
The Landsharks won more individual matches and sets in round-robin play and lost fewer games, but games won is the sole criteria for advancement.
“These incredible young adults played with great heart and poise throughout the weekend and I couldn't be more proud of their accomplishment,” coach Eric Wammock said.
In addition to Rankin, Clark and De Vincentis, the team roster included the following local standouts: From Hilton Head Island High — Kate Cram, Sarah Wood, Holly Kerr, Matthew Feldman, Hunter Parrott; from Hilton Head Christian Academy — Kaera Handy, Maddy Bauer, Alex Likins, and former HHCA standout Ben Likins, who is at South Carolina.
Every player played a minimum of two matches and were significant contributors to the team's success. All but one of the Landsharks remain eligible for play next season.
