Haig Point Tennis Club welcomes players to Daufuskie Island this weekend
Fifty-eight men and women are set to take part in the eighth annual Daufuskie Island Adult Tennis Championships this weekend.
The tournament, hosted each year by the Haig Point Tennis Club, will feature amateur players ages 35 and up competing in 10 different divisions. In addition to singles competition, players also will battle it out in doubles and mixed doubles.
"This is always a lot of fun," Haig Point director of tennis Ron Gwyn said. "The members have a lot of fun with it. It's great that we can get some people over here from the mainland."
Gwyn said the event is a popular one because of its unique location on the island -- only accessible by ferry -- and the atmosphere surrounding "this great little tournament."
Haig Point recently received an Outstanding Tennis Facility Award from the U.S. Tennis Association and the club had women's teams compete in the last two state championships, according to a press release.
The tournament is structured so that players of similar skill levels will compete against each other, with prizes to each division finalist. Gwyn said several frequent competitors are back this year.
"We actually have quite a few returning players," Gwyn said. "Obviously, a lot of the players will bring their spouses over and kind of make a day of it. A lot of people don't get to come to Daufuskie. The facilities that we have here are outstanding. It's just a lot of fun."
Play begins Friday and continues through Sunday.
