Hilton Head's Dillon among winners at Charleston junior tennis tournament
Hilton Head Island's Madison Dillon won the Girls 14 Singles Red Division of the Dunlop Junior Tennis Championship over the weekend at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island in Charleston.
The unseeded Dillon beat fourth-seeded Kennedi Carter, 6-4, 6-3, in the final.
Along the way, Dillon upset top-seeded Jillian Hobbs, 4-0, 4-1 in the round of 16, blanked unseeded Emily Elliott, 4-0, 4-0 in the quarterfinals and knocked off third-seeded Marium Raza, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Dillon plays tennis for Hilton Head Christian Academy and trains at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy,
Bluffton's Micheala Hegarty defeated Jenna Malone, 4-0, 4-1, to win the Girls 10 Singles White Division. Hegarty upset top-seeded Angelina Jacobs, 4-2, 1-4, 1-0 (5) in the semifinals.
Hegarty also teamed up with Bluffton's Natalie Bassett to defeat Francis Drake and Anya Nelson, 6-0, and win the Girls 10 Doubles championship. The duo upset second-seeded Mackenzie Penton and Kiley Pickens, 6-0, in the quarterfinals before knocking off fourth-seeded Anna Grimes and Jordan White, 6-0, in the semifinals.
