Local Golf Notebook, Jan. 30: Volunteers sought for Hilton Head Golf & Tennis Festival

The Island Packet Hilton Head Island Golf & Tennis Festival, taking place Feb. 27 through March 2, has various volunteer opportunities available throughout the event. Those interested in volunteering should register online.

Also, there are still spots available in the Hilton Head Cup Pro-Am Tournament, a PGA Carolinas sanctioned event to take place Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Sea Pines Resort's Harbour Town Golf Links and Heron Point Courses.

SHIMMIN 5TH AT SCGA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

Okatie's Gary Shimmin finished fifth in the Men's Senior Club event at the S.C. Golf Association's 18th annual Tournament of Champions this past weekend at the Tradition Club at Pawley's Island.

Shimmin, who was tied for the lead after the first day, shot a two-day total of 73-77--150 to finish six shots behind winner Bill Smunk of Kingstree.

Hilton Head's Marcus Byler (80-75--155) was 12th in the Men's Club Champion event, nine strokes off the pace set by winner Kevin Roberts of Chesnee.

Hilton Head's Terrie Allemang was fourth, seven shots back, in the Women's Division after shooting 80-79--159.

The field consisted of 105 men and women Club and One Day tournament champions throughout South Carolina. The event is one of 20 major championships the SCGA conducts throughout the year.
