Hilton Head Island junior takes runner-up honors at Orange Bowl tennis
Vikash Singh capped a strong two-week run through a pair of junior tennis’ most prestigious winter stops with a runner-up Boys 16s finish at last weekend’s Orange Bowl International tournament in Plantation, Fla.
One week after Singh reached the Boys 16s semifinals at the Eddie Herr International at IMG Academy, the Smith Stearns Academy student came within a game of winning the Orange Bowl crown before falling in three sets to Steven Sun of Glen Cove, N.Y., 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Singh, a native of India, grabbed a 5-3 lead in the second set and was serving for the match when Sun dug in, got the needed service break and swung the momentum.
Nonetheless, it marked the third time in the past three months that Singh reached the final of a ranking event. That doesn’t include the Eddie Herr, where he was ousted by Britain’s Jake Hersey one step shy of another final.
Singh also enjoyed doubles success at both stops, reaching the Eddie Herr final and Orange Bowl semifinals with different partners.
