-- Kennedy Shaffer, the 17-year-old amateur from Ivan Lendl IJTA, breezed through her first-round match with American Jessica Failla, 6-1, 6-0. Shaffer, a University of Georgia recruit, will face American Marie Norris some time after 11:30 a.m.Thursday on Court 12.
-- Maria Bouzkova, the 16-year-old Czech who won the junior girls title at this summer’s U.S. Open, will face her first tough test of the main draw -- fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula.
-- Top-seeded Chanel Simmonds faces Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva at 10 a.m. Thursday on Court 12. She also advanced Wednesday in doubles action, teaming with Karolina Wlodarczak to defeat Usue Maltane Arconada and Nicole Frenkel 6-1, 6-1.
