Beautiful times with family at home in the SC Lowcountry — onshore, inshore and offshore
Thanksgiving has come and gone but for me I am still waking each morning with a big old smile, thanking the stars for all I have.
My two children, Camden and Logan, are still here along with my son-in-law, Andrew, my two grandchildren Alice and Benjamin, my wife, Karen, and my children’s mother, Allison. Talk about a great week, I haven’t laughed this much in ages.
Camden is an orthodontist in Charlottesville, Virginia, and thankfully I get to see her and my two grandchildren often but because Logan lives in Los Angeles, visits to the South Carolina Lowcountry are way less frequent.
Logan is an avid outdoorsman, like I am, but hiking is his real passion with fishing more an afterthought since he doesn’t have access to boats, etc. With that in mind, I planned on getting him out on the water as much as possible during his trip here.
Talk about perfect weather and fish nearly jumping in the boat, this past week has been unbelievable.
On our first inshore trip with Bass Pro Shop’s Jim Hagale, we caught over 60 trout and redfish in just over an hour.
The next day, just Logan and I went sheepshead fishing and the bite was insane. We caught and released fish after fish, keeping only one.
After an epic battle, Logan caught a monster sheepshead of over 10 pounds.
If you think fishing couldn’t have gotten any better, think again. Running offshore to bottom fish on absolutely flat calm seas, he caught grouper, snapper, king mackerel, triggerfish and even a cobia.
A father-son bonding was my wish for his visit and the Big Guy upstairs came through in a big way.
I hope that each of you had equally memorable family time as I did because this year was one of my very best.
