Shane van Gisbergen’s road-course NASCAR heroics have reached Charlotte.

The 36-year-old Cup Series rookie had a dominant performance Sunday at the Roval, leading 57 of 109 laps and holding off the pack late.

It’s the fifth victory of the season for van Gisbergen, who’d already been eliminated from the postseason. Ross Chastain battled with Joey Logano for the final spot above the playoff cut line late in the race before wrecking with Denny Hamlin in Turn 16 of 17 on the last lap and crossing the finish line in reverse. Van Gisbergen kicked a rugby ball into the Charlotte Motor Speedway grandstands, as is his victory tradition.

“Amazing day,” van Gisbergen said. “We did a pretty good job making some tweaks from (Saturday) and the first two stages, it was a pretty nice balance where we were able to make some gaps. Start of that third stage, Kyle (Larson) and Christopher (Bell) were really good. I lost the lead, lost control of the race and just couldn’t match them, really, they were a bit better than me.

“Then whatever we did, whatever Stephen (Doran, crew chief) did at the pit stop, the car just came alive. The last two stints were just magic.”

The New Zealand-born phenom got to the lead early in the race after starting in second place, passing pole-sitter Tyler Reddick on Lap 3.

After van Gisbergen cruised to the opening stage victory, late pit stops from both van Gisbergen and Kyle Larson — who led 27 laps — allowed Ryan Blaney to earn the Stage 2 victory.

“These things are so damn hard to win,” Doran said. “To get five in a row is crazy, but a testament to this team. How we built it, and executed in stage three, we knew we were going to split it into three (stages). It was a pretty clear call. Some of these guys split it in four, really just as a Hail Mary move to try to catch a caution, and we just stuck to our plan and it played out right.”
