NASCAR ‘Full Speed’ returns to Netflix, with plenty of drama, sweat and gears
NASCAR “Full Speed” is back on Netflix.
Several Cup Series drivers are featured in a new series, which premieres Wednesday and includes five 45-minute episodes.
The second season of “Full Speed” showcases the raw intensity and pivotal moments that define the highest level of NASCAR. These new episodes break down last year’s postseason and offer a deeper dive at the human element behind their speed, an intimate look at the drivers’ personal lives and support systems.
“A series like ‘Full Speed’ lets us branch out a little bit and take you inside the lives of these drivers off the track,” John Dahl, NASCAR’s senior vice president of content, said in an interview. “We follow them through the playoffs, there’s all sorts of drama. And we really get to know the significant others of several of our drivers: Julia Piquet with Daniel Suárez, Brittany Logano, Gianna and Ryan Blaney, Harrison Burton and his fiancé Jenna (Petty), Marissa Briscoe and Chase Briscoe, and Morgan Bell and Christopher Bell.
“You really get to know these drivers as the multi-dimension people who they are.”
‘There are people making those teams work’
This new season shows the personal journeys and relationships that fuel the high-octane action on Sundays.
Focusing on the human element, “Full Speed” looks to resonate with a broader audience, inviting viewers to connect with drivers on a personal level. Getting to know their significant others adds another dimension to the narrative, highlighting the emotional stakes intertwined with the professional demands of racing.
“It’s story,” Dahl said. “In the end, it’s ‘how do you bring people in?’ With compelling characters, stories that make you care more about races. You don’t just see cars going around a track. There are people inside those cars. There are people making those teams work.”
‘Those little tenths of a second that could make a difference’
Amid success of other sports series like “Quarterback,” NASCAR wanted to shine its own spotlight.
Viewers get to see scenes like Blaney, the recent Cup Series champion and top driver, working on his pool. Suárez is featured with his dad, who played an immense role in his journey from growing up in Mexico to racing in the big leagues of stock car racing.
Every second counts — on and off the track — and this new series continues to capture the men and women involved in NASCAR.
“We really do get to see them as people,” Dahl said. “They do have to become superhuman to get in a race car and do what they do. There are so few drivers who are able to even make it into the Cup Series. It’s a very competitive sport, and we see it in ‘Full Speed’ — those little tenths of a second that could make a difference in winning and losing.”
