American Legion baseball hits Beaufort diamond Thursday
American Legion baseball returns to the Lowcountry as the Beaufort Ospreys senior squad opens its season Thursday night at home against Orangeburg. First pitch is 7 p.m. at Beaufort High School.
After the Ospreys program went on hiatus last year, American Legion Beaufort Post 9 committed to a renewal in 2016 that includes facility upgrades at the Beaufort High field. Some 50 teens reported for tryouts earlier this month, filling both a senior team and junior team.
All games are open to the public, with $5 admission for adults, $3 for students and free for children 12 and under, as well as all veterans. Concessions will be sold.
The junior Ospreys will begin their season with a home game June 2, with Aiken providing the opposition.
The regular season runs through June, with postseason play beginning July 5. Regional playoffs are followed by the state tournament, regionals in Ashboro, N.C., and the American Legion World Series in mid-August.
