The South Carolina High School League has denied Hilton Head Island High School's appeal attempting to overturn the officials' call on the final play of Friday night's 49-45 loss to Hanahan.

Hilton Head High athletic director Joe Monmonier said the school got a written response on Wednesday.

According to Monmonier, the statement, upholding the game's outcome, read, "The South Carolina High School League's football contests are played under the governance of National Federation Football Rules. With that, there are no opportunities to protest/appeal the outcome of a completed contest.

The response included no opinion on whether the call was correct or not.

"That is what was in the letter to me," Monmonier said. "Nothing more to it."

On the game's final play from the Hanahan 4-yard line with 7 seconds left, Hilton Head quarterback Aidan Hegarty was forced to scramble and slipped on the wet turf while throwing a touchdown pass. The official ruled his knee touched down on the 10-yard line, ending the game.

Hilton Head supplied the SCHSL with video evidence from WHHI's broadcast that the Seahawks claim shows Hegarty's knee never touched the ground.

"Aidan steps up and throws a touchdown on the last play of the game," Payne said on Saturday. "The officials rule the quarterback's knee was down. We have video of it. It was 4 or 6 inches off the ground."

Monmonier admitted the appeal would likely have little chance of affecting a change, but he said SCHSL executive director Jerome Singleton promised the league would issue a written response earlier this week.

"At least it is on record," Monmonier said Saturday in a text.
