Hilton Head Island head football coach B.J. Payne has been named the Palmetto Champions All-Star Class 3-A Coach of the Year for the Lower State by the South Carolina Football Coaches Association.
Payne has led the Seahawks to an 8-0 start this season and a No. 7 ranking in the state Class 3-A rankings. With a win over Stall on Friday night, Hilton Head would match its second-best start in school history.
"To me, it's really an overall program award," Payne said. "It goes to all of our coaches and players for the past four years who bought into the program, believed in it and have put in tireless hours in pursuit of developing a top program in the state and a change in culture.
"With that said and because of that, I am extremely proud. Awards come and go, but with GPA over a 3.3 in the past four years combined as a team, and so many kids having the opportunity to pursue playing in college and getting a college degree, those are the program wins that do not show up on a scoreboard on a Friday night."
Payne will be honored at the annual Palmetto Champions All-Star Football Banquet at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in Columbia.
