Friday roundup: May River edges Bluffton. Beaufort Academy holds off Colleton Prep
Jaiden Jones ran for two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter to help May River to a 14-7 win over Bluffton on Friday in high school football action.
Jones finished with 189 yards for the Sharks, who stayed in second place in Region 7-4A. May River finishes the regular season against Hilton Head this week. The Sharks can finish second in the region with a win and Lucy Beckham loss.
May River took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Jones’ run in the Sharks’ first series. It stayed 7-0 until the third quarter when Vonhohenstraeten hit Jaylin Linder for a touchdown with 3:27 in the third quarter.
But the Sharks went up for good on Jones’ run with just over eight minutes left.
Bluffton hosts Colleton County next week.
Beaufort Academy 20, Colleton Prep 19
Beaufort Academy stopped Colleton Prep on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to hand Colleton its first loss of the season.
Beaufort Academy improves to 6-2 on the year.
BA quarterback Brayden Dineen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. The game was tied twice before the Eagles took the lead on Dineen’s pass to Zeke Gonzalez with 2:13 left.
Colleton Prep answered with a touchdown but opted to go for two instead of trying to tie with the extra point. But the pass was wide as the Eagles picked up the big win.
Beaufort 48, North Charleston 8
On Thursday, the Eagles got another big game from Kacy Fields and stayed alive for the Region 7-3A title.
Fields rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns for Beaufort, which leads Hanahan for the region lead. The Eagles host Hanahan next week in the regular-season finale.
Fields has more than 1,100 yards rushing since being moved to full-time tailback duties five games ago.
Quarterback Samari Bonds threw TD passes to Thomas Purdy and McLeod Reichel and also ran in a score. Houston Wilson also had a rushing TD.
James Island 45, Hilton Head Island 8
James Island inched closer to a region title with a win over the Seahawks.
The Islanders can win the region by beating Lucy Beckham next week.
Whale Branch 35, Branchville 7
The Warriors won their second straight game with a win over Branchville.
Whale Branch can finish second in the region next week if it beats Bamberg-Ehrhardt.
Ridgeland-Hardeeville 38, Edisto 25
The Jaguars picked up their first victory of the season.
Hilton Head Christian 48 John Paul II 32
HHCA came back from an early 14-0 deficit to beat the Warriors.
Eagles quarterback Dylan Clark had a big night passing in the victory.
Christian Hilton and Tony Hill had touchdowns for John Paul II.
Pinewood Prep 40, Thomas Heyward 20
The Rebels lost their third straight game, all to non SCISA Class A opponents.
