Wednesday football roundup: Bluffton wins Bridge Bowl overtime thriller
The annual Bridge Bowl didn’t disappoint on Wednesday night.
Luis Rojas hit a 27-yard field goal to help Bluffton to a 35-32 overtime victory over Hilton Head Island.
The game, along with other Lowcountry matchups, were moved to Wednesday night because of Hurricane Ian.
Hilton Head got the ball first in overtime and attempted a field goal but there was a bad snap and then the Seahawks threw an interception. Bluffton clinched it as Rojas hit his second field goal of the night.
The game featured three ties and the Seahawks led 18-10 at halftime.
Bluffton tied it at 18 on Trace Hilaman pass to Jaylin Linder with four minutes left in the third quarter. Troy Timko gave Hilton Head Island the lead back back late in the third to make it 25-18. Timko finished with four rushing touchdowns.
Bluffton tied it again at 25-25, a minute later on Hilaman’s pass to Michael Fritz with 11:51 left. Hilaman found Fritz again to put Bluffton up 32-25 with 6:23 left.
But the Seahawks tied it on Timko’s TD run with 3:21 left
Hilton Head got inside Bluffton territory late in regulation and the Bobcats came up with a big sack to force overtime.
Beaufort 34, Philip Simmons 14
Kacy Fields carried it 26 times for 271 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles (5-1) rolled to a region victory.
Quarterback Samari Bonds was 7-of-9 passing for 101 yards and he also rushed for 33 yards and a TD.
May River 49, Lucy Beckham 14
Quarterback Tanner Macy threw two touchdowns and also ran for two scores to help the Sharks (2-4) to a win in the region opener.
Jaiden Jones also had two touchdown runs and Darion Perry had one for May River. Macy and Jones each rushed for more than 100 yards.
Battery Creek 40, North Charleston 24
Battery Creek (3-4) rallied in the second half for its second straight victory.
The Dolphins trailed 24-14 at halftime but shut out North Charleston in the second half.
Jeremiah Mceachin ran for 262 yards and three touchdowns including two in the second half for the Dolphins.
Quarterback Hunter Smith threw a pair of TDs in the second half. Smith’s TD pass to Naquan Gordon gave the Dolphins a 26-24 lead with 7:35 left.
Smith was 5-of-11 passing for 91 yards. Gordon and Ty Emmert each picked off passes for Battery Creek.
Beaufort Academy 48, Palmetto Christian 6
Jaxen Porter and Devonte Green had big games in the Eagles’ victory over Palmetto Christian.
Porter rushed for three touchdowns while Green had two rushing TDs and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Zeke Gonzalez returned a fumble for a score and also picked off a pass for the Eagles (5-1).
Cardinal Newman 69, John Paul II 40
Quarterback Duncan Skehan threw five touchdown passes and rushed for one as the Cardinals (3-3) scored a season-high 69 points in the win.
Cardinal Newman has scored at least 48 points or more in each of its three wins.
John Paul II quarterback Christian Tilton threw two touchdown passes to Tony Hill and also ran for two touchdowns.

The Warriors (4-2) bounced back from a loss last week with a victory to start region play.
