Back-to-Back! Hilton Head Christian repeats as SCISA 2A champions
Williamsburg Academy did its best to slow down Hilton Head Christian’s offense for almost a half Saturday.
But the Eagles scored three touchdowns in just over a two-minute span between the second and third quarters to defeat the Stallions 34-7 in the SCISA Class 2A championship game at Charleston Southern.
It was the second straight title for Hilton Head Christian and sixth in school history. The Eagles have made three straight trips to the championship and have won 25 straight games.
“We have a good culture of playing, and the guys really play for each other,” HHCA coach Ron Peduzzi said. “I have had real good players the last three years and great coaches. They are great men, fantastic fathers and great men of faith. We are fortunate to have been here the last three years and it was a fantastic night.”
Speedy Robinson, who transferred from Ridgeland-Hardeeville High. rushed for 48 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the stretch that helped Hilton Head Christian put the game away.
“These boys are truly special and are my family,” Robinson said. “I just came here this year and was treated like family. They treated me like I was here for 12 years.”
Robinson’s second touchdown put the Eagles up 12-0 with 10 seconds left in the second quarter. The touchdown came a play after quarterback Jace Blackshear connected with Jackson Lanier on fourth-and 18 that got the Eagles to the Williamsburg 8-yard line.
The Eagles, who were averaging 48 points a game on offense, scored on their first drive of the second half as Robinson ran it in to make it 20-0 with 10:15 left in the third quarter. On Williamsburg’s next possession, Robinson forced a fumble and Matt Scarpa recovered.
Shortly after, Blackshear hit Lanier on a shovel pass to make it 27-0 with 9:47 left in the third quarter.
“In previous games like Pee Dee Academy, they came back and fought,” Robinson said. “We couldn’t allow that. We had to punch them in the mouth right away after halftime and put the game away.”
Blackshear finished with 184 yards passing and 66 yards rushing. More than half of Blackshear’s passing came in the third quarter. Peduzzi said the senior quarterback played the final month of the season with a broken finger that will require surgery in the offseason.
“Jace just makes plays and makes things happen every since he has been here,” Peduzzi said. “Him and Bulldog (Jackson Lanier) have played more than 50 games on the varsity level and it showed tonight when the game was tight.”
Hilton Head Christian’s defense, known as the Junkyard Dogs, turned in another dominating performance. Williamsburg’s lone score came after a muffed punt recovered at the 5-yard line.
The Stallions finished the season at 10-1 and were making their first championship appearance since 2013.
