May River moves into first place with win over defending champion Beaufort
May River took over first place in the Region 7-4A standings Friday night.
Garvin Douglas accounted for three touchdowns as the Sharks knocked off defending region champion Beaufort, 24-21. With the win, May River moves to 3-0 in the region and leads Beaufort and Hilton Head Island by one game with two games remaining.
Amariee Morris had two first-quarter touchdown runs to put Beaufort on top, 14-0. Douglas got May River on the board with a TD pass to Max Kimmel with 11:46 left in the second.
After Darion Perry blocked a punt, Douglas scored on a TD run to tie it at 14 at the half.
Douglas gave the Sharks a 21-14 lead with a 47-yard run with 7:46 left in the third. Jonah Comfort hit a 40-yard field goal with 9:36 left to give the Sharks a 24-14 lead.
Beaufort quarterback Tyler Healy scored on a TD run to get the Eagles within 24-21 with less than six minutes left.
After forcing a three-and-out, Beaufort got the ball back with a chance to tie it or win but couldn’t capitalize.
Hilton Head Island 16, Bluffton 7: Notre Dame commit Jaylen Sneed rushed for 155 yards and a TD as the Seahawks won the Bridge Bowl.
Sneed also was 6-of-7 passing for 48 yards and had a sack on defense. Chase McCracken carried it 26 times for 124 yards and Evan Elliiot caught four passes for 40 yards.
Carter Saleeby kicked three field goals for HHI, the third of which put the Seahawks up 9-7 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter. Sneed made it 16-7 with a 1-yard run with 5:10 left.
KJ Frazier had a TD catch for Bluffton which put the Bobcats up 7-6 with 7:46 left in the third quarter.
Beaufort Academy 43, Orangeburg Prep 6: The Eagles jumped out to a 27-6 halftime lead to move to 3-0 in region play. Beaufort Academy faces Hilton Head Christian next week with first play in the region on the line. Cody Dalrymple ran for three scores. Jaxen Porter threw a TD pass, caught one and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Hilton Head Prep 42, Northwood Academy 6: Loncelle Daley scored four touchdowns and went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season to help the Dolphins past Northwood. Daley finished with 13 carries for 186 yards. Quarterback Tristan Bonomo was 4-of-5 for 57 yards and two touchdowns, one to AJ Barger. Jake Rodney Brown also had a TD run.
Thomas Heyward 34, St. John’s 7: Tony O’Banner ran for two touchdowns and Tyshon Mansell threw two in the Rebels’ victory.
Brandon Howard had a TD run and also picked off a pass for THA
Whale Branch 56, Estill 6: Quarterback Jakhi Pusha rushed for three touchdowns and also threw two in the Warriors’ win.
Hilton Hilton Christian 53, John Paul 12: On Thursday, Jace Blacshear threw four touchdowns and also ran for three as the Eagles moved to 8-0 on the season. Joseph Robinson had a TD run and catch for HHCA. Christian Tilton had two TD passes for the Warriors.
