HS Football: May River, Whale Branch, BC win openers; Peduzzi sets HHCA record

Ahmad Green rushed for three touchdowns as May River won its season opener in the move to Class 4A with a 28-7 win over James Island on Friday.

The game featured several lightning delays and lasted almost four hours.

Battery Creek 45 Academic Magnet 7: Terrance Ashe won his debut as Battery Creek coach.

Jaeon Allen ran for a score and returned an interception for a touchdown. QB Jacove Anderson threw for a score and ran for one.

Thomas Heyward 16, Beaufort Academy 14: Bruzza Pusha scored the tying touchdown and added the go-ahead two-point conversion in the fourth quarter for the Rebels.

Hilton Head Christian Academy 45, Colleton Prep 20: JP Peduzzi became the school’s all-time TD leader, and HHCA stayed unbeaten on the season.

Peduzzi threw a pair of scores to Jace Blackshear and also scored on a 31-yard run. Blackshear also ran for a touchdown.

Bethesda Academy 40, Hilton Head Prep 15: Bethesda broke things open with 21 points in the third quarter to defeat HHP.

Tommy Staffer led the Dolphins with 76 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. Harrison Green passed for 76 yards.

Whale Branch 33, St. John’s 0: Jalen Reeves had a big night on the ground to help the Warriors to a season-opening win.

Reeves rushed for 210 yards and three scores, two with runs of 60 and 75 yards. He also had an interception on defense.

Whale Branch’s defense forced five turnovers.

Colleton County 28, Bluffton 7: The Bobcats dropped their opener at home.

Nayrone Holmes threw for two TDs and ran for another for Colleton.

Kylan Simmons led Bluffton with 137 yards rushing and a TD.

Thursday

Pinewood Prep 37,John Paul II 33: Pinewood snapped a 15-game losing streak with a victory over the Warriors.

Pinewood’s TJ Wright caught two TD passes and ran for another.

John Paul II led 33-20 at halftime.

JP II quarterback Jeremiah Young had almost 400 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the loss.

The Seahawks won the battle for first place in the region.
